The Invisalign Palatal Expander (IPE) is a modern approach to jaw expansion in growing children, designed to help widen the upper jaw and create more space for developing teeth. Unlike traditional expanders, IPE uses a series of custom-made, removable appliances that gradually guide the upper jaw toward the desired expansion.
For parents, starting an IPE journey can come with several questions: How often should it be worn? What can my child eat? Can they remove it? What should we avoid? And how do we make sure the treatment works as planned?
The success of IPE depends not only on the appliance itself, but also on consistent wear, proper care, and following your orthodontist’s instructions. In this guide, we’ll cover the essential Do’s and Don’ts of Invisalign Palatal Expander treatment to help make the process smoother and more predictable for both children and parents.
Wear them 24×7(almost)
Just like Invisible clear aligners, Palate expanders and holders are designed to be worn day and night (for at least 20 hours a day). Failure to wear these for the prescribed number of hours can affect the ability to achieve the desired palatal expansion and lengthen your treatment time. Also, your child will only gets used to the device if its worn full time.
1 Expander = 1 Day
Expanders are supposed to be changed daily. However, in some instances, we will advise you to wear it for longer than a day.

Follow the Queue
Every Removable Palatal Expander is designed to be 0.25 mm wider than the previous once. Make sure to wear these in the correct order. On the upper right corner of each bag label, you will find the expander or holder stage number marked as ‘XX of YY’ (for example, ‘03 of 28’). On the device itself, the matching two-digit device stage (‘03’ from the example) can be found toward the end of the imprinted number. Once you have completed each stage, clean the device as instructed below, then store it in its original matching bag.

Eat with the expander ON
The devices may be worn while you eat and drink. You should not eat hard or sticky foods, chew gum, or drink anything sugary or acidic while wearing the appliance. If your child is not comfortable eating with the expander ON, you may remove the expander for meals.
But, what about Oral Hygiene?
It is recommended to rinse the mouth thoroughly after each meal. Brush and floss your teeth before you insert the device. If you don’t have access to a toothbrush, you can simply rinse your mouth, and then clean your devices by holding them under running water.
How do I clean the Invisalign Palatal Expander system? (IPE).
Clean the device with a soft bristle toothbrush, water and a small amount of toothpaste.
Rinse thoroughly.
Wipe with the soft tissue to dry.
Is it easy to wear & remove?
Yes, Follow the right technique to wear and remove the expander and it wont take too long for your child to get used to it.
Be careful while inserting and removing the appliance.
Do NOT use excessive force to bend or twist a device to get it off.
Do NOT use any sharp object to remove the expander.
Have heard that Palatal Expansion is Painful!
Its the pressure more than pain.
You may expect a pain of the level 2-3/10.
Most patients experience soreness and pressure after starting treatment, especially in the first week. It is a sign that the devices are working, expanding your palate to the desired position.
Will wearing the Invisalign Palatal Expander System devices affect my speech?
Like all orthodontic treatments, the device may temporarily affect your speech, and you may have a slight lisp for a period of time. However, as your tongue and palate get used to having devices in your mouth, any lisp or minor speech impediment caused by your devices should resolve.
Can I still participate in Sports/Outdoor activities?
Yes, Absolutely. Invisalign Palatal Expander has the least impact on your day to day life.
