Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure to remove one or more wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars (aka third molars) located at the back your mouth. They usually erupt between the ages of 17 to 25.
If the wisdom teeth don't have enough space to erupt fully in your mouth they will need removal.
Impacted/Partially erupted third molars may cause pain, infection or damage to the adjacent teeth.
To prevent future problems, some dentists and oral surgeons recommend wisdom teeth extraction/removal even if impacted third molar teeth aren't currently causing problems.
The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons states that “about 85% of third molars will eventually need to be removed.”
